What is involved in labour induction acupuncture?

The acupuncture protocol that we use at Evolution Medical Care involves:
  • Inserting fine needles into specific points on the arms, legs and lower back/sacrum for up to 45 minutes.
  • Removal of acupuncture needles.
  • Application of Press Tacks and instructions are given for the appropriate stimulation of these points.
How does Acupuncture help bring on labour?

Acupuncture is used in order to promote stimulation of the uterus/cervix and thereby bring on contractions. Acupuncture points may also be used in order to help with stress levels and ease anxiety.

Acupuncture can not only be used to bring on labour, but also encourage a smoother delivery by decreasing the labour time and reducing pain.

Acupuncture and Labour Pain

The labour painkiller of choice, Meperidine may produce undesirable side effects.
In this
controlled clinical study, it was shown that women that had acupuncture were less likely to request painkiller medication and therefore were in less pain.

Acupuncture has been shown time and time again to reduce pain, complications and time spent in labour.

I’ve heard acupuncture is quite useful in inducing labour.

Yes! There have been many studies performed such as this one, which used only 2 acupuncture points and showed a significant reduction in the number of days overdue in pregnancy.

At Evolution Medical Care we have been aiding in starting the labour process with thorough acupuncture protocols and the results have been very positive! The baby immediately becomes more active under acupuncture treatment. This is very useful in getting things moving in the right direction.

Why is acupuncture so popular and effective for labour induction?

  • Acupuncture involves No Pharmaceuticals.
  • Is completely natural.
  • Is non-invasive, We use points on the hands/feet and lower back.
  • Importantly, this means that there are No Side-Effects!
Due to the nature of acupuncture, the stimulus induced is able to create movement in a healthy and desired direction. This improves the pre-labour state and labour itself.

A pregnant mother and her baby are both more open to stimulus than others, and this helps in acupuncture having such a profound effect.

Training and experience show that specific points on the pregnant mum more powerfully aid in inducing labour. These points are used in combination with points useful for the individual presentation to achieve the greatest results.
